about

This is a recording of my second semester sophomore year final composition project. it is a quartet for cello, oboe and 2 nylon string acoustic guitars.

The title refers to the idea of moving upwards or downwards through a hierarchical system and finding oneself back at the point where one started. the piece is supposed to feel like that on a large scale overall as well as a small scale within sections. In some ways the piece is an exploration of fractals within music, but mostly it's just supposed to sound cool.

shouts out to my composition teacher Pat Muchmore for guidance and the Cygnus ensemble for playing it.

Performed by members of the Cygnus Ensemble

note: this performance was not recorded in an ideal room, so some of the finer points of the guitar work get lost, and rehearsal time was very limited- as the ensemble in residence for Sarah Lawrence College, Cygnus has to rehearse and perform something like 15 student pieces as well as all of their other work playing pieces by big deal composers for real concerts- so there are some sections where rhythms are a little off or the feel isn't exactly quite right, but overall I think it provides a pretty good idea of what the piece should sound like.
